The owners of this home are several years from retirement, but were ready to go ahead and downside. The ranch house they chose will make good retirement home. Ranch houses tend to have only a few steps and be one level, so they are easy to adapt. Adapting a home for retirement has several names. Aging in place is a popular term for remaining in your home as we grow older. Anyone thinking about retirement should look into ideas like universal housing or aging in place to see what level of adaptation is right for them.

In this renovation the center load bearing wall was removed and the ceiling joists were removed. The owner now has a spacious open living plan that looks great. Later on if they are using a walker or wheelchair, there will be plenty of room to maneuver.

The downside of the 1960 & 70’s ranch plans is that they don’t have as much closet and bathroom space as we currently like in master bedrooms. So we added a new master bedroom. Then we took the existing master bedroom suite & turned it into his and hers walk in closets & enlarged the larger master bath. The new bathroom features a large shower and double sinks. Having a shower with no or a low threshold is an important part of staying in your home longer since it’s easier to get in and out of.
